About Mike:
Before I started doing this work for hire, I would be the “go-to guy” for friends, relatives, and small-time contractors with weird problems. Sometimes, no standard solution exists. Typically it was the type of situation that had them scratching their heads.
I grew up in a family where mechanical engineering was commonplace. I’m sure some of it rubbed off on me. I was part of a family business where non-standard creative & elegant solutions were the normal way.
My High School years had a heavy load of industrial arts. My dad decided I would get a Construction Technology & Contracts Management degree. With all the personal homes I’ve rebuilt it’s paid off a hundred times over. My time in the Marines was as an electronics repairer. Late in life, I got a Computer Science degree. It’s the culmination of these experiences and more that give me the ability to find unique solutions to unique problems.
Now near my retirement years, I take joy in helping others solve their problems, for a reasonable price.

You can’t get there from here…
Cabinets are wonderful devices. The corner curio solves the problem of eliminating wasted corner space in a dining room and elegantly displaying your finest items. In this situation, the previous homeowner wanted theirs to resemble built-ins, so they trimmed out the edges. However, they had a problem with the dining room light switch—which was installed…

Have It Your Way
For any Handyperson, small jobs shouldn’t be a big deal. It’s kind of what we signed up for. Restoration of an original curtain rod in this case brought a lot of joy to the customer. Personally, I could tell why another handyperson—who promised to do this job—didn’t do it. I was glad to pick up…

Repairing Pet Damage
We all love our pets, but sometimes they can push us to our limits. This pretty face always decided to teeth on the windowsill instead of her toys. Now that she’s grown the homeowner was ready to reverse the damage. A window’s Stool can be repaired in many different ways. Sometimes you tear out the…

Floored By Their Choices
As a customer, never settle for easy choices you don’t love; you have to live with your choices, not the contractor. As the first bathroom rebuild ever-in-life for this client, the flooring was no easy choice. So many Pros & Cons to worry about! Price, durability, look & feel, finish, size, maintenance, and more all…

Keep It Or Sweep It Kitchen Makeover
“Oh… There are lots of reasons why your kitchen drawers don’t work right anymore…” At first, the kitchen was grim. Drawers that couldn’t be opened, a lazy-susan corner that wouldn’t turn, and doors that were opening in the wrong direction were among the top reasons they wanted to gut it and buy their own. Planning…

Your Wish Is My Command…
When it comes to carpentry, I’m a bit of a Genie/Djinn. You’ll get what you wish for, so be careful with what you ask. This customer needed a custom set to maximize happiness with a kitchen nook area. I hate the word “bespoke”, but that’s what we’re talking about here; one-of-a-kind items like the rich…

Shockingly Good Amaeture
The customer and first-time homeowner wanted to learn all about electrical work. It seems that for most people, working on residential electrical things is much more frightful than a professional-grade Halloween “House of Horrors”. For those of us that understand electrical switching equipment, and how the power flows through the network, it’s not too troubling.…

Love It or Leave It
I know, I know; potty talk is always unacceptable. In this case, the new owner bought an under-priced home in a higher-priced area as a “fixer-upper”. Before moving in they wanted a few things done. The “wet rooms” (kitchen, bathroom, laundry), are the type of things that need to be right for it to be…

Check yo-self b4 u-reck you-self
The picture above is just for laughs. I did not take that picture. Residential electricity isn’t as difficult or as dangerous as most people think. However, a person should know all the basics and seek counsel before trying DIY projects. Sometimes you may think it’s safe to proceed when it’s not. For example, I have…

Bathroom Makeover For Handicapped Veteran
I didn’t know this till I was told, but Veterans can get reasonable allowances to pay for upgrades to their residence like these handicapped accommodations in their shower. In this case, a Former Marine was working for a Former Marine. Because of his mobility impairment, he struggled to lift his feet over the tub’s edge.…

12-steps go to Rehab
This staircase not only had terrible workmanship flaws since its original installation but since then “carpenters” who tried improving it were actually breaking building codes that are there to protect the inhabitants from accidental injury and even death. The guard rail for the second-floor platform was a death trap before we got to work bringing…

Hide That Industrial Basement Look
Basements are always a challenge. Painting the concrete doesn’t change much. Altering it too much can impede the function of the components of a basement. Finding a middle ground that permits reversibility and accessibility is no easy feat and usually needs a one-of-a-kind solution. At this location, we had a sump pump and an electrical…

Pulling Wires From Down There To Up Here
We live in a modern world, but the buildings we inhabit weren’t built thinking life would be like this. Computers, and networks, and connectivity, OH MY! Most of us want our modern devices to work, but we also want high-tech things hidden from view. In this situation, the small bedroom that was converted to an…

Call For Backup!
Buy a locally made premium quality backup sump pump that you will never regret owning. If you don’t, you won’t save much money upfront, but you will lose a lot of value if you have a real flooding problem. Installation is not too difficult, but if you want, I’m for hire to set yours up.…

A Fireplace Is Something To Love…
I’m not sure if I’ve personally ever seen two identical fireplaces in my life. Even if I did each is somewhat unique in its own way. Because a fireplace is a central point of focus for everybody’s eyes as they walk into its room, you better really like the one you have if it’s your…

Ground Level type Deck
A deck doesn’t neet to hover in the air on posts! You can have it right on the ground.

Eye Sore To Eye Catcher
Sometimes you just have to upgrade things… like when they’re part of the front yard! It’s not just a recreational feature for your kids. It’s also a landmark that helps your guests find your house. You can’t say, and look for the broken basketball backboard in our driveway. However, you also don’t want to risk…

When The Student Is Ready The Teacher Appears
I have a favorite quote… I am always willing to learn, but I’m rarely willing to be taught. Sir Winston Churchill Many of us struggle with our desire to try things because we fear embarrassing mistakes, or in the trades getting an injury. It’s as if we collectively started to believe that we should be…

The Lake House Gets A Finished Basement
Along the shores of Lake Erie, many types of communities can be found. This Lake House happens to be inside a gated community of Crystal Beach Ontario Canada. Because of my friendship with the purchaser of the lot, and the prohibitive price the builder was going to charge her to finish the basement, I got…
